Leo Club of Wesley Methodist School 11th International Relationship Day

The Leo Club of Wesley Methodist School held its 11th annual International Relationship Day on the 4th April 2014. The theme for this year is 'Mirror Mirror on the Wall'. which derives from the famous German fairy tale 'Snow White'. The purpose of this event is to give people a deeper understanding towards folktales as well as their origins from different countries. This year, we managed to amass a total of RM 7560 with a number of over 500 attending guests.

At 3.00 pm, registration was open and ushers were sent out to their respective locations to usher incoming guests to the school hall for the event, The doors were officially opened at 3.30 pm, as guests swarmed into the hall to attend the event, which consisted of students, school staff, Leos and Lions alike. The guest of honour for this event was none other than our school principal, Madam Chia Loy Tian. The hall was decorated beautifully by the decoration team as many lifelike mirrors decorated as portals to various fairytale settings such as The Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz, as well as Wonderland from Alice in Wonderland, are placed in the gallery. Representations of the four seasons were also hanging across the hall to showcase the different elements that can be found in a fairytale.

Once the guest of honour and the VIPs have arrived, ushered by the Leo Club President and IR Director, the hall was dimmed and the show started at 3.45 pm with an introductory video that tells the story of how a boy, who loses his parents, escapes reality into the mirror dimension where he spends the rest of his life plating with his imaginary friends created from his mind. Immediately after that, the emcees, Leo Lim Wee Xin, playing the character as the child, and Leo Tan Hooi Xin, as the mirrored existence of the same child, introduced themselves and addressed the guests accordingly. The singing of the national anthem, the recitation of the Leo pledge and the roll call were carried out according to protocol.

Among the many performances, which are depicted as the tales of adventures of the child in the mirror dimension, includes a dance performance utilising a new black light theatre concept, which shows how the child dreams the story of Alice in Wonderland. Later on, a humorous sketch on the origins of the German fairytales by the Grimm Brothers that brought thunderous laughter, as well as a touching pantomime of the story of the Little Matchstick Girl by Hans Christian Anderson from Denmark that touched hearts were presented. They portray life lessons on how we should never compromise happiness just because of hardships in life, as there is always a silver lining behind every cloud. There were also speeches in between performances by the organising chairperson, Leo Joel Wong, who thanked the guests as well as the Leo Club members and explained the meaning behind the theme, followed by the Guest of Honour, Madam Chia's speech, who praised the Leo Club members for their hard work.

Towards the end of the event, we invited our club faculty advisor, Madam Lavanya up on stage to present tokens of appreciation to all VIPs and attending guests. Afterwards, another video is shown as the child realises that he cannot create true happiness for himself with the loss of his parents, and resolves to return to the real world. His physical body advances in age and turns into dust, as he dies to reunite with his family. Before dying, he asks his fantasy friends to roam the surface of the Earth to spread happiness to children by telling stories of his legacy, and thus 'fairy tales' were born. A dance performance ensues later before the event ended at 5.00 pm, and all guests were invited to the canteen for some light refreshments prepared by the refreshments team. The refreshments served included buttered gingerbread men, layered jelly, enlarging cakes and a shrinking potion of Ribena which represents The Gingerbread Man, mirror fragments from Snow White, and the magical cake and potion from Alice in Wonderland.
