A Visit to Rumah Charis (Home for the Children)

On the 12th June 2014, 63 members of the Leo Club of Wesley Methodist School and 2 teacher advisors went to Rumah Charis (Home For The Children) which is a home for mostly underprivileged children and some old folks in Taman Yarl for our community service project. Before the trip, all Leo members gathered at the school compound at 8 am and a short briefing was given about the trip. The members were asked to sit according to groups before the briefing. After taking attendance and the briefing, the members boarded the bus at 8.30 am. The Leo members reached Rumah Charis at 9 am. Ms. Suzanne, the person-in-charge of Rumah Charis, greeted us and gave a short briefing to us.

After that, we collected items such as shampoo, facial cleanser, oyster sauce and many more from the members as donation to the home. At around 9.15 am, we were divided into several groups by the person-in-charge of the orphanage and she allocated places for every group to clean. Some of the members cleaned the kitchen and some cleaned the boys’ and girls’ dorm. The Leo members brought their own cleaning utensils such as brooms and mops for the cleaning. After about one hour of cleaning, we gathered at the dining area for a performance by one of the Leo members, Jonathan Chew who played the piano. Some children from the home sang for us too. We enjoyed the performance by them very much.

At around 11 am, the children were split into 5 groups while all Leo members went into their own respective groups such as origami group, drawing and colouring group, science experiment group, storytelling group, tuition group and food group. For food group, the members went into the kitchen to prepare spaghetti and the sauce for our lunch. For the origami group, the members taught the children how to make origami such as heart, crane and even paper aeroplanes. The kids had a lot of fun making origami. For the drawing and colouring, the children were given colour pencils and A4 papers and they were asked to draw according to the pictures we showed them. The children enjoyed themselves very much and they did a good job drawing and colouring the pictures. For science experiments, we managed to do five experiments with the older children. We did the ‘Ocean in a Bottle’ experiment, ‘Flowing Carbon Dioxide’ experiment, making noise from straw, lifting coin in the water without wetting our hands by using candles and rekindle candles by using its soot. The children were impressed by those experiments and had a good time experimenting. For the storytelling group, the members interacted with a group of younger children by telling them a few stories. For the tuition group, the members patiently taught English and also Science to the primary school children who are weak in those subjects. When our lunch was ready, all the Leo members together with the children went to the dining area for lunch. Everyone enjoyed their lunch and had a good time bonding with the children.

After lunch, the Leo members cleaned up the dining area and bid goodbye to the children and staffs in the home. Before we left the house at 1 pm, we also gave the children some stationaries as gifts. Everyone had a very long fun filled day.
