On the 28th of March 2015, the Leo Club of
Wesley Methodist School organised its annual funding project – Amazing Race.
The event started from 7.00 a.m. and ended around 1.00 p.m.. A total of 123
teams consisting of 369 students of Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur
participated in this year’s Amazing Race.
The organising committee for this year’s Amazing Race
was chosen back in November 2014. The Funding Director of Leo Club of Wesley
Methodist School, Leo Ng Cal-Vin was the Organising Chairperson of this large
scale funding project. He was assisted by the two Assistant Organising
Chairpersons, Leo Chia Ying Yan and Leo Debbee Chang Keen Bee, as well as his
fellow dedicated committee members, Leo Tan Bee Bee, Leo Ho Yanru and Leo
Jonathan Chew Jia Wei. As soon as the organising committee was formed, ideas
were generated through several brainstorming sessions. A week later, the main
idea for the gameplay and storyline for Amazing Race 2015 was set. Without
wasting any more time, a formal proposal was prepared and approved by the
Principal of Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur, Madam Chia Loy Tian. The
organising committee then started preparing for the event immediately.
“The Dimensional Drift” was the theme for this year’s
Amazing Race. The project was aimed to raise funds for the Leo Club of Wesley
Methodist School in order to support the club’s future community service events
and activities. Besides that, we hope to develop teamwork among the students as
well as raise awareness and interest of the students towards world history.
The gameplay of the race was based on a storyline. The
story narrated about 6 mysterious scrolls which could grant one a mysterious
power, so powerful that the disastrous World War III was started. The participants were required to travel
around the city of Kuala Lumpur to interview the characters in the story as
well as overcome a few obstacles in order to obtain the clues which would lead
the participants to uncover the mystery.
A total of five locations around the city of
Kuala Lumpur were chosen to serve as the stations for the race, including our
school, Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur, PWTC, Masjid Jamek, KLCC and
Ampang Park. Various official documents were sent out to the officials,
including the police department as well as the compound owners of the
respective locations. We also called up and sent countless official documents
to request for sponsorships from the general public. Sponsorships played an
extremely important role in the project as we hope to decrease the cost of our
project as much as possible, thus raising more funds for the club’s future
community service projects. We were lucky to secure a few sponsors who truly
contributed a lot to our event. Two of the major sponsors were KMT and
Methodist College Kuala Lumpur who sponsored various items for the event,
including goodie bags, snacks, prizes and pens.
A pre-run was held on the 31st of
January 2015 to identify the unforeseen difficulties and problems. A few ex-Leo
members and the ex-faculty advisor, Ms. Leong Peck Lan was invited to
participate in the pre-run. A post mortem was held after the pre-run and we
discussed the problems and difficulties faced. As a result, we made a few changes
to the route and gameplay of the event. The police department as well as the
school Principal was informed about the changes.
After countless late night discussions and
burning the midnight oil to prepare for the event, the day of the event finally
arrived on a beautiful Saturday morning. On the 28th
March 2015, the Leo members started arriving at 5.45 a.m. in school. Leo
members who were in their neon-green T-shirt were briefed and started preparing
for the event. Registration counter was set up before registration started. At
7.00 a.m., registration was opened for all participants while all Leo members
departed to their respective stations together with their teachers-in-charge.
The participants were then gathered at the assembly ground at 7.45 a.m.. A
welcome speech was given by Leo Ng Cal-Vin, followed by a sketch performance,
as well as a briefing of the rules and regulations of the event. At 8.00 a.m.,
the participants of Category A were flagged off by the principal, Madam Chia
Loy Tian. Meanwhile, the participants Category B were arranged to form the two
letters of ‘AR’ and a photo was taken. They were then flagged off at 8.20 a.m..
The participants were required to travel between the stations
by walking and through the public transport systems, namely the RapidKL STAR
LRT and RapidKL Putra LRT. During the event, Leo members were stationed around
the city of Kuala Lumpur as the story characters who were interviewed by the
race participants, game masters who were in charge of controlling the crowd at
the stations, traffic marshals who were to direct the participants to their
destinations and lastly, the station masters who were assigned to manage their
respective stations. The committee members were assigned to patrol from station
to station, ensuring the race ran smoothly. We had also invited 15 teachers to
help out in managing the stations.
