Volunteer Work at Neighborhood Learning Centre
On
the 22nd of April 2017, 10 Leos accompanied by 1 faculty advisor as well as 7
Lions made their way to the Neighbourhood Learning Centre. The Leos gathered in
school at 9.45 a.m. and proceeded to the centre at 10.00 a.m. with the Lions.
After
a 15 minute drive, we reached our destination. The centre housed 20 Burmese
children and after introductions, the Leos spent time with the children. The
Leos split themselves into groups and bonded with the children. Soon after,
group activities were carried out. The first activity was a game called
"Rock, Paper, Scissors, Caterpillar Style." The children, who ranged
from ages 3-10 years old enjoyed themselves in a competitive version of a
classic game. The winners of each round were allowed to take the treats brought
by Lion Tan Poh Ling. The Leos then distributed Oreos to the other children.
A
game of "What's the time, Mr. Wolf?" was played next. The children
truly enjoyed themselves. Packets of Mamee Monster were then distributed after
the game. Shouts of joy were heard when we gave out the food. While they were
eating, the Leos spread out into smaller groups and played a game of
"Hamburger". Time passed quickly as both the children at learning
centre and the Leos enjoyed themselves. It was soon time for lunch.
After
washing their hands, the children lined up in an orderly fashion to receive
their food. The Leos delegated their work and some were serving while others
were in charge of making the children line up. There were dishes such as fried
bee hoon, which was prepared by Lion Elessee Lai, cookies which were prepared
by Leo Chee Gee Ren and brownies which were prepared by Leo Sitara Darini. The
children were very happy and some even came back for second rounds!
After
lunch, the Leos tidied the place up. 5 members were in charge of cleaning the
dining hall and 5 members were given the task to wash the plates as well as
tidy the kitchen. The place was spotless soon after. Without realising
it, it was time for both the Leos and Lions to leave the Neighbourhood Learning
Centre. With heavy hearts, the members bid their goodbyes to the children and
proceeded back to school.
