Minor Community Service (B): Kechara Soup Kitchen

On the 27th of January 2024, Saturday, 6 members from our club, who were accompanied by Mr. Jake Goh, our very own Faculty Advisor, visited the Kechara Soup Kitchen Society at Jalan Imbi for our second Minor Community Service Project. The objective of this project, which was planned with the global cause of hunger in mind, was organised to give members a chance to actively help alleviate the plight of the hungry, sick and the poor and empathise with the plight of the marginalised in our society, especially the urban poor. The project was led by the Organising Chairperson, LEO Syed Rayn Omar Albar, who was assisted by his committee members LEO Triss Tan Sze Shan and LEO Un Jae Wen.

The participants arrived at the destination at around 2:30 p.m. and immediately set about their work by helping the soup kitchen separate bananas from their bunches and arrange them into boxes for distribution. The members were then further briefed about the centre’s activities and operations, and were split into groups to carefully count, arrange, and distribute the food boxes into even more trays and containers. This unique method of distribution enabled the soup kitchen to reach out in aid to people across a wider area in the city and ensure that their recipients of aid could receive an adequate supply of hot food, water, and fruit daily. Members also aided in preparing and packing the hot foods, which were received by one of the Society’s suppliers. Additionally, they assisted in loading and unloading food items onto lorries and cars to be distributed to the aid stations across the city.

Throughout the very hectic program, our members learned more about the finer details of the operations of a soup kitchen, as well as how they could help out. Most importantly, the experience instilled all participants with a greater understanding of the suffering faced by many of the urban poor, especially with the rising cost of living. Our service promptly concluded at around 5:45 p.m., after which the participants took a group photo with other volunteers working in the soup kitchen to fully capture the wonderful time they had spent there. All in all, the event was a spectacular success, marking another key milestone in our club’s united fight against hunger.
