The Kids of Sekolah Khas Jinjang Utara

Imagine you were born as a child with a shorter tongue than the others. You won't be able to speak properly. Learning will be difficult because you won't be able to interact with your guardians or teachers. You would be left, isolated, not knowing what to do or how to call for help.

We will never understand what this kid have gone through, even if we tried. However, we can still make a difference by trying. And that is what the we have been doing previously on the 6th of November.

The club paid a visit to Sekolah Khas Jinjang Utara. Located in Canossa Welfare Home of Jinjang, it is a school meant for special children and the autistics. Since it began, the school has been completely relying on donations and funds to run. We decided to pay a visit to this place mainly because we have seldom approached disabled children, especially in a big scale. None of us knew what to expect when we were informed that the children's age group there is from 7 - 22.

Upon arriving the school at 8. 40 am, we were warmly welcomed by Madam Shanti, the person-in-charge to show us around. She is one of the experienced teachers who have been teaching the kids for many years. She gave us LEOs a briefing before we would go upstairs to the classrooms to teach.

In the briefing, Madam Shanti told us that they have seperated the kid's based on their learning abilites, with Level 1 as the lowest, and Level 5 the highest. So you can actually see 7-year old kids learning with 17-yr old teenagers. Interesting.

Since it was the holidays and they just finished their syllabus, most of the students will not be present for school. And thus, we were seperated into 4 groups of 9 to 10 people and were distributed to the different classes.

LEOs lining up to get inside the classrooms. See, the school wasn't really huge as it was a part of Canossa Welfare Centre.

It was a block. And it is was barely big enough to contain all of us.

The Leos started off their first activity, which is musical chairs. The game lasted for at least half an hour. After that, the Leos carried out a game of charades.

Leos explaining to the children about the game.

At around 10.30 a.m, the Leos handed out the drinks and assorted cookies donated by the club to all the children.

After the short break, a game of "freeze" was conducted.
All the children present there enjoyed themselves as they
had to dance until the music stopped.

The children dancing to the music. Look how happy they are?

After that, the members and the children played "Folow the Leader".

The Leos distributed the gifts after that and the children
went home at 11.30 a.m.

It was truly a remarkable experience for all the Leos, and
even for some of them, it was their first visit to a
school like this.
