Major Community Service Event: Global Awareness Challenge 2021

We present to you the organizing committee!
From the 5th April 2021 to 11th April 2021, the LEO Club of Wesley Methodist School organized its first-ever online major community service event - Global Awareness Challenge 2021. This major community service was led by the Organizing Chairperson, LEO Santtosh Sivaram, who was assisted by both of the Assistant Organizing Chairpersons, LEO Low Shun Xuan and LEO Chloe Tan Her Yi, together with committee members, LEO Jayshen Ratnadurai, LEO Wong Xin Ping Xandra and LEO Christopher Joshua Chong Weng Jun. Global Awareness Challenge 2021 was a district-level event that involved a total of 120 participants, including the students of Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur (International) and various LEO Clubs in District 308B1.

The main purpose of this event was to fulfill two of the five global causes of the LEO Club, which is to raise awareness regarding the current condition of our environment and also the community struggling with diabetes. Global Awareness Challenge 2021 consisted of two different challenges - Diabetes Challenge and Environment Challenge. The Diabetes Challenge was aimed to encourage more people to exercise regularly, in order to reduce the risk of having diabetes. On the other hand, the Environment Challenge was aimed to increase the number of plants on Earth by encouraging people to plant at home.

To complete the Diabetes Challenge, participants had to cover a total of at least 10000 steps in a week. They were required to use a step tracker application to prove that they have completed the challenge. Participants then had to take a screenshot of their achievement and post it on their social media platform to encourage others to exercise regularly.

To complete the Environment Challenge, participants had to plant at least one plant at home and take a picture of it. For those participants that already had plants at home, they had to provide their proof, showing that they were taking good care of their plants. Similar to the Diabetes Challenge, participants then had to post the pictures on their social media platform to encourage the rest of the community to plant as well.

In order to raise awareness successfully, the organizing committee took a step further by gathering all the interesting facts in relation to diabetes and the environment. All these fun facts were posted on the club’s Instagram page. In conjunction with this major community service event, there was also a lucky draw event, which consisted of amazing prizes. All prizes were courtesies of our generous sponsors.  Participants that completed at least one of the two challenges stood a chance to win those prizes. Each participant also received an e-certificate.

To sum everything up, our club’s first-ever Global Awareness Challenge was a tremendous success and it was undoubtedly an invaluable experience to the participants. Our club would like to thank all the participants for taking part in this event and supporting our work. A huge thank you to our organizing committee for giving their all  in planning this event. We hope each and every participant enjoyed our Global Awareness Challenge and we look forward to seeing them again in our upcoming events!

10,000 steps, done and dusted!
