Minor Community Service Project: Free Tree Society
Hello again, FTS! |
The main objective of this project was for the LEO members to acquire knowledge and the necessary skills to ensure the well-being of plants. This was also an opportunity for the LEO members to be exposed to the environment around them and to educate them on the ways they can help sustain it.
After gathering all 9 of the LEO members and the Faculty Advisor at Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur (International), the group departed to Free Tree Society at 9.00 a.m. After a 30 minute ride, the members reached their destination and were greeted by the Free Tree Society volunteers. There, the members were given a tour around the nursery whilst a volunteer briefed them on various environmental issues and the methods we can use to solve these problems.
After the very informative Biodiversity Talk and Environmental Solutions Talk, the next activity for the day was the Planting Workshop. Here the LEO members were taught on how to transfer plants into different pots, and the importance of good soil as well as how to make your own ideal soil. After a few demonstrations from the volunteers, it was time for the members to put their new-found skills to the test. The members enjoyed themselves throughout the entire process of planting, weeding and soil mixing.
At 11.45 a.m. it was time for the group to head back to school. Before bidding farewell, the Free Tree Society volunteers allowed the LEO members and Faculty Advisor to pick a plant of their liking and bring it home for planting. The members are immensely grateful for the time spent at Free Tree Society with the volunteers there. This was definitely a wake-up call for them to start living in a way that would help our environment and prevent it from further damage.
