URBAN ESCAPE 2020: MISSION: LA MISSIVE
On the 22nd February 2020, the LEO Club of Wesley Methodist School organized its annual funding event - Urban Escape 2020 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Urban Escape 2020 was presented to the school this year with the theme Mission: La Missive, which was inspired by our unique storyline. This large scaled funding event was led by the Organizing Chairperson, LEO Siah Wei Chen, who was assisted by his two Assistant Organizing Chairpersons, LEO Wong Yen Ming and LEO Chow Ee Jun, together with committee members, LEO Chan Zhi Xinn, LEO Wong Zi Yin and LEO Yong Cheng Jin. As soon as the proposal and storyline of this event was approved by the Principal of Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur (International) last year, the organizing committee immediately started carrying out the planning and preparations for the event.
The main purpose of this event is to raise funds for the LEO Club of Wesley Methodist School in order to support the club’s future community service projects and activities. In addition to that, the event also aimed to develop teamwork, problem solving skills and observation skills among the participants. It also aimed to provide a golden opportunity for the participants to explore the city of Kuala Lumpur and have a getaway from their daily stress.
In this event, the students from Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur (International) had to form teams of three and travel around the city using public transportation such as the LRT and Monorail, using namely the Rapid KL Sri Petaling Line LRT and KL Monorail Line in order to complete the race. The winning team will be judged based on the points collected throughout the race and the total time taken to complete the race. The participants are required to complete a series of games and collect clues from various stations in order to solve the mystery. The group to obtain the most points in the shortest time period will emerge as the winners of this event. This year’s Urban Escape received overwhelming support from the students as it involved a total of 136 teams which consisted of 408 students of Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur (International).
In short, the storyline for this event signifies the participants receiving an important mission to decode the messages from the aliens which landed in the city of Kuala Lumpur a few weeks back. The participants were disguised as Truth Seekers who were racing against the clock to save the evil scientist, who murdered the other scientists for their prize money, from escaping and to hand in the decoded messages back to the government. The main lesson behind this storyline was to advise the participants to not to be blinded by wealth.
A total of five locations around the city of Kuala Lumpur were chosen as stations for the race which consisted of Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur (International), Sultan Ismail Station’s Bridge, Hang Tuah Interchange Station, Plaza Rakyat LRT Station and LOT 10 Shopping Mall. Various official documents were sent out to the officials, including the police department as well as the compound owners of the respective locations. Not only that, countless official documents were also sent to request for sponsorships from the general public, as sponsorships played an extremely important role in alleviating the cost of the event. This year, we were fortunate enough to secure quite a number of sponsors who made significant contributions to our event.
The event kicked off with the registration of participants at 7:15 a.m. sharp at Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur (International). The participants then proceeded to the hall for the opening ceremony, which included a welcoming speech by LEO Siah Wei Chen. Tokens of appreciation were also presented to our Guest of Honour, LION Chan Yoke Poh and LION Shirene Lee. Participants were also briefed on the rules and regulations of the event to ensure that the participants would abide by them throughout the event. After that, the opening video presentation was shown which revealed the storyline and mission to the participants. At 8:20 a.m., the Lower Secondary participants were flagged off and LION Chan Yoke Poh officially started the race. The Upper Secondary teams gathered at the stage for a group photo while waiting for their time to flag off. After ten minutes, our Faculty Advisor, Mr Lee Sek Khoon, officially flagged off the Upper Secondary teams.
The first station of the event was in Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur (International). The participants were given a 5x5 bingo grid which were filled with different zoomed-in pictures of our school compound. They were required to find the items or places and complete at least two lines of the bingo grid. Then the participants had to figure out the route of this year’s race based on the train stations’ puns given. After that, they travelled from station to station to complete all the missions and retrieve the morse codes as part of their clues. A wide series of interesting games were carried out in this event such as TikTok moves, reverse videos, mind games and many more. Once the participants complete all the missions, they were to return back to school where they were given a final question paper about the storyline of the event. The race officially ended at 2:30p.m. as planned. All the participants arrived back in school safely and submitted their answers to the LEO members in charge.
Throughout the event, LEO members were positioned around various stations in the city of Kuala Lumpur, with the game masters to facilitate the games, and traffic marshals to guide and direct the participants. The Board of Directors were also given duties to handle their respective stations, while the committee members were assigned to patrol and handle all stations. Furthermore, 8 teachers, including our faculty advisors, were invited to help out in maintaining order at the stations. PBSM members of our school were also on duty in case of any emergencies throughout the event.
The LEO members stayed back after the event to clean up the school compound and ensure all facilities used are in their original condition. Then, the members took group pictures after the debriefing session by the committee members. Urban Escape 2020 ended with the traditional “Three Lion Roars”.
To sum everything up, this year’s Urban Escape was a tremendous success and it was undoubtedly an invaluable experience to the juniors as it was the club’s first major event of the fiscal year. Our club would like to thank all the participants for taking part in this event, and all the teachers who volunteered to help out in ensuring the discipline of the participants throughout the event. A huge thank you to our club members for putting this event together as a club, and also to our organising committee for pouring in their blood, sweat and tears in planning this event. We hope all the participants enjoyed this year’s Urban Escape and we hope to see them again in our upcoming events!
